常州天寧寺是我國重點保護寺院和江蘇省文物保護單位常州天寧寺雄踞常州東門外，前俯舉世聞名的京杭大運河，後倚常州第一大公園紅梅公園，是常州現存規模最大，保存最完整的千年古剎。其特點是五大："殿大、佛大、鍾大、鼓大、寶鼎大，被譽為"東南第一叢林"。常州天寧寺位於常州市內紅梅公園南面,解放路728號。始建於唐永徽年間(公元650～655年)，開山祖師是法融禪師，北宋政和元年(公元1111年)，改為現名，距今已有1300多年曆史。幾經毀建，幾度更名，向有“東南第一叢林”、“一郡梵剎之冠”的稱譽。乾隆曾三次到常州天寧寺拈香，併為寺題"龍城象教"匾額和楹聯。這裏終日香火鼎盛，遊客如雲，現為全國重點保護寺院和江蘇省文物保護單位。常州天寧寺內主要殿宇有八殿、二十五堂、二十四樓、三室、兩閣等建築，總面積過110畝之多。天王殿為全國屈指可數大殿，檐下掛有全國政協副主席、中國佛教協會會長、當代著名書法家趙樸初題寫"天王殿"三個金光閃閃的大字巨匾。羅漢堂內，五百羅漢個個金身雄偉，神態各異，栩栩如生。大雄寶殿是全寺最大的佛殿，供奉三尊大佛，俗稱"三世佛"即正中的釋迦尼佛、東方世界藥師琉璃光佛及西方極樂世界阿彌陀佛。大殿兩側牆上嵌有石刻羅漢像518幅，其藝術水平之高更為罕見，被視為寺中瑰寶。天寧寺的主要建築有八殿、二十五堂、二十四樓等。走進山門就是寬敞的天井，迎面是天王殿，殿內左右兩邊是高達7.8米的四大天王，在全國同類塑像中是最高大的。天王殿中的彌勒佛坐在漢白玉神台上，佛龕飛檐翹角，上端刻有90尊佛像，精緻美觀。天王殿左右兩旁分別是普賢殿和文殊殿。殿後門外天井兩側是羅漢堂,供奉五百羅漢。大雄寶殿殿頂重檐九脊，高33米，寬26米，進深27米，鐵力木大柱高約30米，素有“棟宇摩霄漢，金碧燦雲霞”之稱。殿內供奉高大奇特、輝煌莊嚴的三世如來佛像，中間站着阿難和迦葉，背後供奉海島觀音，又稱童子拜觀音。大殿兩側分立形態各異的二十諸天。大殿右前角的一口巨鍾，重達4噸。左前角是一面直徑約2米的大鼓。大殿右後角有一尊泰國佛教協會贈送的銅佛。大雄寶殿左右兩側分別是地藏殿和觀音殿。在地藏殿的西、南兩側，觀音殿的東、南兩側的長廊上有磚刻的五百羅漢像，神態各異，栩栩如生。大雄寶殿後面還有藏經樓等建築。據説天寧寺中的觀音、地藏、普賢、文殊四殿象徵着普陀、九華、峨眉、五台四山。所以過去人們常説，凡到天寧寺燒過香的，就如同已參拜過佛教四大名山了。天寧寺附近還有紅梅閣、文筆塔，艤舟亭等名勝古蹟。千年古剎天寧禪寺於近年復建唐宋風格的.佛塔。佛塔取名“天寧寶塔”，以祝頌天下安寧。寶塔建築總面積為27000平方米，共13層，呈八角形佈局，總高達153.79米，為迄今中華佛塔之最。塔剎採用金剛寶座塔形式，一主四次五根剎杆並立，內鋼外金，燈飾展示五彩華光。塔林有2000多尊漢白玉小寶塔，整塊漢白玉的護欄鐫刻經文。寶塔首次使用刻上如“龍城象教”等佛教吉祥語的青銅銘文瓦。塔身外飾5萬塊鐫佛玉石。塔內每層置銅匾，飛檐翹角置風鈴……整座寶塔壯觀，厚重，清新，典雅，於2005年底，矗立在龍城寶地。天寧寺以它悠久的歷史，雄偉的建築，造型別具的佛像以及那累累的佛學碩果，吸引着千千萬萬的海內外遊客。
