when和while的區別

when有鑑於之意，如：

when 有雖然、儘管等讓步之間，如：

They kept digging when they must know there was no hope to escape.

while 有對比之意，譯為“而”。如：

That region has plenty of natural resouces, while this one has none.

while 有表示“部分同意”之意，如：

While she is likable girl, she is difficult to work with.

when和while 都有“在...時候”的意思。

主從句都是長時間的動作時，只用while;

While she read the paper, I cleared up the kitchen.

涉及到年齡和生活的不同階段，用when;

When I was a child , I lived in London.

while不用於短時間的動作(這個大家應該都知道)

(1)when即at the time that…，指「在……之時」，例如：

When I finished my letter, I posted it.

我寫完信便寄出。

(2)while即at the same time that…，亦指「在……之時」，但其所表示的「同時」?有「持續性」，例如：

We must strike while the iron is hot.

我們必須趁熱打鐵。

(3)while不可用來表示「時間點」(a point of time)，例如：

錯：While I finished my letter, I posted it.

因為動作具有「瞬間性」。

(4)while可用於對比(contrast)，when則不可，例如：

Mary is in blue while Cindy is in black.

瑪麗穿藍色衫，而仙蒂穿黑色衫。

(5)while又可表示「只要」(as long as)，例如：

While there is life, there is hope.

留得青山在，不怕沒柴燒。

(6)再可表示「儘管」(although)，例如：

While I admit that the task is difficult, I don't think that it is impossible.
