世界地球日(World Earth Day，4月22日)

活動起源於美國。1970年4月22日，在美國民主黨參議員蓋洛德尼爾森(Gaylord Nelson)和哈佛大學學生丹尼斯海斯的倡議和組織下，美國數十萬羣眾參與了聲勢浩大的“地球日”活動，呼籲創造一個清潔、簡單、和平的生活環境。 作為現代環保運動的開端，“地球日”活動推動了多個國家環境法規的建立。

1990年4月22日，全球140多個國家、2億多人同時在世界各地舉行形式多樣的環境保護宣傳活動，呼籲改善全球整體環境。這項活動得到了聯合國的肯定。

2009年4月22日，第63屆聯合國大會一致通過決議，決定將今後每年的4月22日定為“世界地球日”。

20世紀90年代，“地球日”的發起人創立了“地球日網絡”組織，將全世界環保主義者聯合起來推動“地球日”活動的開展。 地球是人類的共同家園，但人類的活動卻對地球造成了嚴重的破壞。生物賴以生存的森林、湖泊、濕地等正以驚人的速度消失;煤炭、石油、天然氣等不可再生能源因過度開採而面臨枯竭;能源燃燒排放的大量温室氣體導致全球氣候變暖，由此引發的極地冰蓋融化、海平面上升等問題威脅到人類的生存發展。 保護地球資源環境、尋求可持續發展模式已刻不容緩。

在2009年“世界地球日”來臨之際，“地球日網絡(Earthday Network)”發起“綠色一代(GREEN GENERATION)”計劃，倡導人類社會經濟發展向可持續模式轉變。該計劃呼籲公眾維護三條核心原則：消除人類對化石能源的依賴性，致力於可再生能源的開發利用，創造一個“無炭”的未來;承諾個人消費習慣與可持續發展要求相符合;建立“綠色經濟”，通過為貧困人羣創造“綠色崗位”使其脱貧，並將全球教育體系轉變為環保型。

從20世紀90年代起，中國在每年的4月22日都舉辦“世界地球日”宣傳活動，並根據當年的情況確定活動主題。

最初的'地球日選擇在春分節氣，這一天在全世界的任何一個角落晝夜時長均相等，陽光可以同時照耀在南極點和北極點上，這代表了世界的平等，同時也象徵着人類要拋開彼此間的爭議和不同，和諧共存。傳統上在很多國家都有慶祝春分節氣的傳統。早期聯合國也在每年的春分舉行世界地球日的活動。
